Straight answers
Four we get asked every week
Ceilings is one of nine trades out of the Harrow yard.
Can you skim over Artex?
Usually, yes — nibs knocked off, bonded and skimmed flat. We never sand it down: pre-2000 coatings can contain asbestos and that is a licensed job, not a plasterer's.
Will my downlights still work?
They come out, get covered, and go back in tested and certificated by Marek. The set-out gets checked while they are down, so they end up symmetrical.
My ceiling is stained — is it the roof?
Might be the roof, might be a pipe. Joe and Tom both look before anyone quotes for plaster: covering a live leak is money thrown away.
How long before I can paint?
Five to seven days for fresh skim, longer in a cold house. We write the date on the sign-off sheet.
